Spotlight on Verde Valley First Books

  • April 21, 2021
  • 10:30 AM
  • Zoom

Verde Valley First Books was started in October of 2018 by Peg Schlichtemeier.

Their mission is to ensure that three- and four-year-olds living in poverty in Sedona and the Verde Valley have age-appropriate books in their homes. They currently send out over 550 books each month and will start up reading those books to the kids in their classrooms again as soon as it is safe to do so. The reading volunteers teach reading techniques to children who may not have had their own book before, and they are encouraged to read it again with someone at home.

80% of the books Verde Valley First Books give out go to low-income children. 32% of children in our area live in poverty and 60% of third graders do not pass the AZMerit Literacy Exam. A student living in poverty who cannot read at grade level by the end of third grade is 13 times less likely to graduate from high school.

Join us on April 21st at 10:30 to learn all about Verde Valley First Books and its founder Peg Schlichtemeier.
