The Sedona Women - Community Service Opportunities
The Community Service Committee is excited about our upcoming calendar of events.
We look forward to hearing from you or seeing you at one of our Volunteer Events below.
UPCOMING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Your Community Service Committee has been made aware of quite a few needs within the Verde Valley, and there are many opportunities for TSW members to help out. Given that Covid-19 has eliminated most in-person group projects for now, below are a variety of ways we can safely assist in filling community needs.
Adopt-A-Kitchen for Hope House
Hope House is a new Sedona shelter for homeless families with children that is projected to open this fall. At any time, there are 20-30+ homeless children attending school in the Sedona-Oak Creek Unified School District. The goal of Hope House is to provide services, support, temporary housing, meals and transition programs to help homeless families move into permanent housing. The families living in Hope House will be sharing a common kitchen and it needs to be equipped. So, The Sedona Women is “adopting” the kitchen via a gift registry on Amazon. Simply log onto the registry, select and pay for your gifts and they will ship directly to the Hope House organizer. You’ll feel the satisfaction of doing a good deed and the fun of buying new kitchen things - who doesn’t love doing that!!
Here’s how you get to the registry:On Amazon.com, type “Registry” in the search bar. Next, you’ll see the words “Amazon Registries” at the top of the page and two gift boxes. Click on “Amazon Registries”.
On the next page, put in “Amy Andrews” for the registrant’s name, then select “custom gift list” and hit “Search”.
Choose “Amy Andrews Hope House of Sedona”. You’ll see a nice array of items to choose from. Thank you for helping homeless families in Sedona.
Words & Warmth
Join Sedona Women in making soft, comfy no-sew blankets for children in need. The blankets we make will be distributed in December by the Old Town Mission in Cottonwood. If you’d like some fleece fabric to make some blankets over the summer, please email Kathy Karlic at: firstname.lastname@example.org .
In the Fall we’ll make blankets together, something like an old fashioned quilting bee. These couldn’t be easier to make. If you can tie your shoes, you can make a blanket! Just cut a 3” or so fringe around the edges of a 5' x 5' piece of fleece and knot it to form a cute border. A whole blanket takes about an hour & a half.
If you’re not crafty, you can still join in the fun by cutting apart little message tags and putting them on ribbon. Or if you’d like to write your own inspirational messages & decorate them, that’s fine too! Fun for us and a wonderful gift for the little ones!
If you’d like to learn more about the project, please visit the Words and Warmth Facebook Page.
Food Bank Items of the Month
Every month TSW will suggest a couple of specific items for you to include in your Tuesday morning drop off, if possible.
Successfully Completed Projects
A big Thank You! to the many women & friends who volunteered in March and April to work at the See’s Candy Wagon, St. Andrew’s Community Dinner and the Oak Creek Canyon Clean-up. All were helpful to the community and tons of fun! Special thanks to the leaders of those events, Marilyn Bealfield and her hubby, Mark, and Pam Delay. Without people like this stepping up to lead projects we couldn’t do all the wonderful service projects TSW undertakes!
The Sedona Women and The Sedona Community Food Bank Joined forces again to staff the New See's Candy Wagon for the Fall & Holiday Seasons.
Holiday Cards for Giving Angel Clients - The Sedona Women helped The Giving Angels write and distribute 600 holiday cards to its clientele - area seniors who are at or below poverty level. Because the normal gift bags couldn't be distributed this year, this was one way the Angels brought holiday cheer to its folks.
The Verde Valley Sanctuary - The Sedona Women helped make this Christmas special for the families living there. The Sanctuary offers a safe haven for victims of family violence and sexual assault, providing shelter, community outreach, legal advocacy and education and prevention. The administrators gave TSW a list of children’s toys, games, warm clothes & gift cards requests that made the holiday much brighter for the youngest residents.
St. Andrews Dinner October 26th
Oak Creek Watershed Clean Up October 13th
14 Sedona Women Volunteers delivered 240 gift candles to Verde Valley Caregivers' 'Neighbors' in Sedona and Village of Oak Creek. The angel candles purchased by VVCG included a note 'Thinking of you' and went to many seniors who have been quarantined for months. Recipients were very appreciative and our volunteers felt it was a worthwhile experience. Thank you volunteers!
Mother's Day See’s Candy Wagon Sales - May 3, 2019 - May 12 , 2019 - Mother's Day
See’s Candy Wagon Sales - April 5, 2019 - April 20 , 2019 - We had a very successful Spring Season!
Run Sedona - The Sedona Women successfully staffed the Start/Finish Line Aid Station at Run Sedona on 2/2/19. We cheered on the over 3,000 runners and distributed bananas and cookies to most of them. It was a glorious opportunity to be part of the action without actually having to work up a sweat!!
-A small group of volunteers, led by Annette Petit, served a fabulous
lunch to 40 veterans and their guests on Friday, January 10 at the
library. The event was festive, food was delicious, and greatly
appreciated by all who participated. Thank you to MaryAnn Livingstone
who sang acapella, and to Mary Feeney, who worked a double shift!
The Sedona Women donated over 120 hours to staff the See’s Candy Wagon benefitting The Sedona Food Bank! All the stock was sold and the wagon closed before its scheduled closing date! Job well done!
The Thanksgiving Meal Giveaway at
the Mission in Cottonwood was a huge success. Nearly 650 turkeys, along
with the fixin’s were distributed. Thanks to the 26 volunteers from The
Sedona Women, including those family members who were in town for the
holiday. What a rewarding experience!
